SIGHT SEEING
- The Town Hall, at Miaouli square. The Town Hall of Hermoupolis stands domina-ntly in all its grandeur. It is one of the major Town Halls of Greece, built after the drawings of the famous Bavarian architect Ernst Ziller, from 1876 until 1881.
- Just behind the square stands the beautiful Apollon Theatre, a miniature of La Scala Milan, which was built after the drawings of the architect Pietro Sampo, from 1862 until 1864.
- The Customs Service and Transportation Warehouses building dominates the pier on the other side of the port. It was built from 1859 until 1861, by Alexandros Georgantas.
- The Merchant Navy School was built in 1880.
- The Catholic Church of Evagelistra was built at the early of the 19th century in Hermoupolis and rebuilt in 1829, according to the designs of the Tinian architect Simos, under the orders of an Austrian consul.
- The Archaeological Museum of Syra is housed in the large architectural complex of the Town Hall, where are accom-modated a lot of important discoveries.
- Club “Ellas”, which is located to the right of the Town Hall, is the intellectual centre of the municipality and was built from 1862 until 1863, by the Italian architect Pietro Sampo.
- The cultural centre next to the Town Hall houses the Public Library. The building with the beautiful architecture was founded in 1929 and today includes 35.000 volumes and is mainly lending literature library.
- The Orthodox Church of Metamorphosis was built between 1824 and 1831. Today is the seat of the orthodox Mitropolis (bishop) of Syros and has some exceptional icons and woodcarving.
- The magnificent orthodox church of Agios Nikolaos was founded in 1849 after the drawings of G. Metaxas, yet it opened its doors with its interior decoration unfinished. Thanks to its outstanding blue and gold dome, it belongs to the architectural style domed basilica .
- The Orthodox Church of Kimisis of Theotokou, which was built from 1828 until 1829, is located right of the main square, opposite the Town Hall, and is famous for housing one of the masterpieces of religious art made by the well-known Greek painter El Greco. The talented artist made this superb icon, illustrating the Dormition of the Mother of God (which is the name of the church).
- In the Cycladic Islands, only Syros is presently hosting a casino. The building in which is housed the Hermoupolis-based Aegean Casino was the first public hospital of the capital town, as well as of the Greek state, and was built in 1825 thanks to the contribution of local merchants.
- The Cathedral of Saint George is situated in Ano Syros and has been the Mitropolis (cathedral) of the catholic community of Syros since 1652. It was restored for the last time in 1834 to acquire its actual appearance.
- The Church of Anastasis, thus the Church of the Assumption, was built in 1870 on top of the other hill in Hermoupolis and rivals the imposing church of Saint George. The works started in 1873 after the drawings of the architect Dimitirs Elefteriadis and were completed in 1907.
